Sardine Lakes and Downieville, California
Story by Marty The Wine Guy

I love mountain biking and I usually ride the Northshore Trail in Grapevine, Texas.  One of my goals in life was to ride an epic trail and I have been lucky enough
to ride several.  However, my favorite trail has to be Downieville.  On my visit to Lake Tahoe, I rode the
Rim Trail which was a truly awesome and it had
spectacular views.  I didn't think I was going to get to ride Downieville, because on the map it seemed to far away and I was having to much fun in Tahoe.  But, I
knew it really wasn't that far.
My significant other and I made our way North, Northwest on highway 89 for about 55 miles, then turned left on highway 49
traveled another 23 miles and we took a right at Gold Lake Road and left at Sardine Lake Road.  All together we arrived at Sardine Lakes in less than an hour.

When we arrived at Lower Sardine Lake, the view alone was worth it.  But the best part was our meal at the Sardine Lake Resort.  I had a Venison and
Zinfandel which was for me a yummy pair. We stayed on the campgrounds there however I don't recommend keeping wine with you in the tent after all this is
bear country.  We woke up early the next morning and ate breakfast at the near by restaurant and convenience store.  As simple as that sounds I enjoyed every
minute of it.  This part of California is what I always imagined California to be.  This is the Gold Rush area of 1849 and much of this area looks the same as it did
back then.  We got down to Downieville in time for the second shuttle up the buttes.  Once we got to the top it was nothing but down baby!  OMG, this was an
epic ride of a lifetime that zoomed by in less than an hour and I'd love to do it again.  The adrenaline rush matches the gold rush of 49.  Plus, I didn't get hurt and
only blew out one tire.  All in all I loved, loved, loved it!!!
