Mac McDonald is from Oakwood, Texas who now is a fine wine maker in Sonoma County, California. Yes, he is a proud Texan making fine wines and headlines. Mac is one of a handful of African American Wine Makers in the country and has been recognized by Wine Spectator as the recipient of their 2005 "Critic's Choice" Award. Also, in 2005 his wines were poured at a White House for a 4th of July event.
You can count on Mac boasting about his wines while wearing his trademark blue jean overalls. I met Mac at an African American Wine Tasting Society's (AAWTS) wine tasting at Stephanie's Art Gallery. The event was organized by Schnell Blanton, Founder of the Dallas Chapter of AAWTS and also one of the first African American female wine distributors in the country. She loves Mac's wines and knew I would love them too. I'm a big Pinot lover and Mac's Pinots are up there on my list. Mac is a believer in what he does. He is an award winning wine maker and down to earth story teller. Mac says he learned about making wine & about business from his father. He says the key is to make a good product from the beginning and to keep the customers happy, and you will be a success.
Ryan Douthit, pictured on the left, and I enjoyed Vision Cellars 1999 Pinot Blanc from Monterey County, California, which is also Lil, Mac's wife, favorite wine. We also enjoyed Mac's Riesling (which Mac made for his mama, Elbessie) and his 1999 & 2000 Pinot Noir. Vision Cellars wines are available at Central Market on Greenville at Lovers. You can also find Mac's wines online at Vision Cellars online. Mac & Lil thanks for sharing your time and wine with us.
